Technically a Lepidopterist, Paul prefers the term Butterfly Expert, more relatable and less of a mouthful!
As a young boy Paul was always interested in nature and in the beginning it was more pond life focused with frogs and newts being the main fascination. It was following a childhood visit to Worldwide Butterflies formerly in Dorset that butterflies took hold. He was given some Peacock butterfly caterpillars to rear at home and became fascinated by the unique lifecycle, the spiky caterpillars and beautiful colours of the adult.
A couple of years later at the age of 9 he was taken to the London Butterfly House and given more caterpillars, this time tropical swallowtails! That would be the catalyst to drive forward into a career. At 16 when leaving school he went straight into his first Manager's role in a tropical butterfly house in Norfolk.
He then went on to design and help build another in Norfolk and from there started up a Consultation business.
In the late 90s he moved to London to pursue a career in pop music but still continued his consultant role.
Paul launched his business Butterfly Jungles in 2012 with an award winning show garden at Hampton Court Flower Show. He returned to Hampton in 2013 where he won best large show feature for his Native Butterfly Garden.
His Consultancy side went from strength to strength working with the likes of the Eden Project, London Wetland centre, and various botanical gardens both public and private. He also implemented wild flower meadows and Native butterfly gardens and habitats for a growing clientele.
In 2014 he opened the Butterfly Jungles Experience and Plant Centre in the grounds of Hall Place, sadly a victim of Covid closing in 2020.
He worked on various exhibitions and consulted worldwide and also helped set up the Horniman Museum Butterfly house and trained their staff and volunteers
Paul has great presenting skills and has worked on various TV programmes including Love your garden, Gardener's World and London Tonight. He has also popped up on many news features promoting Butterfly Conservation and discussing the decline of butterflies in the UK.
Paul has been featured in numerous articles in News and gardening magazines and was a regular on Radio shows. He has worked with the BBC, Sky, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and various local radio stations.
Paul is very keen to pursue a career as a Presenter, researcher or other Media roles.
